Giving the Sense – Introduction

Posted in Theology on January 3rd, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Giving the Sense is a four week series on teaching the Bible that I’m teaching for my church. The name is drawn out of Nehemiah 8:8 where Ezra and the Scribes read from the Bible, translated it for the people, and “gave the sense” so that the people could understand.

The goal of this class is to teach people to understand the “sense” of Scripture and be able to teach that to others. I plan to post class notes, random side-thoughts, and class information on this website. You can see what I have posted by going to teaching.cookieofdoom.com. I also have uploaded the notes from the first week.

Stay tuned for more notes and posts on the subject of studying and teaching the Bible.

    That was excellent.

None of those books you mentioned show how the Bible is a single story from Genesis to Revelation or how it is united in its message. How do you plan to go about showing that?

We talked about it quite a lot in class, especially during the week on interpretation. Additionally, my favorite thing about Stott’s book is that it does a better job than any hermeneutics book I’ve seen at explaining the single-story and united nature of the Bible… even though you might not entirely agree with the message.

Is there a book you’d suggest along those lines? I’ve got lots of time to read now, haha.

I have not read John Stott’s book. But yeah maybe i might not like it. I have read “Drama of Scripture, The: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story” and that was good. It is not as deep as i would like, but it was good. I also read “Announcing the Kingdom: The Story of God’s Mission in the Bible” but that was too reformed for me :) They used God’s sovereignty in a way that the Bible does not use.
